Learning the Craft

My pursuit of writing as a serious professional ambition began as a rhetoric student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There I helped reestablish the Montage Literary Arts Journal, to this day the only creative writing outlet for undergraduates. From 2004 to 2008 I took extensive courses in creative, business, and technical writing. When I graduated in May of 2008 I did so with the tools and the confidence to pursue my craft in all ways possible.

A Dramatic Change of Scenery

After graduation I moved to Los Angeles and spent some time working in the film industry. My job was comprised mostly of reading scripts and giving creative notes and suggestions for the development department of an independent Hollywood production company. You couldn’t ask for a better job as an industry neophyte. While on the West Coast I studied writing even more at UCLA Extension, this time focusing on comedic and dramatic screenwriting. I left L.A. in 2010 with valuable experiences and some nice “celebrity encounter” stories to share with friends and family.
